In recent weeks, California Newsreel has released a new documentary titled The Raising of America: Early Childhood and the Future of Our Nation. It is a follow up to the documentary Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality making Us Sick? which effectively communicated the idea that health is, in large part, socially determined. The new documentary features an episode titled, Wounded Places: Confronting Childhood PTSD in America’s Shell-Shocked Cities that addresses the mental health impacts of trauma. In it, poses a reframe of the question commonly asked of people with mental illness from “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”
